McClellanville Personal Sensory Experience
Candle Making Workshop
A Culture of Craft, Rooted in Place
Ignite your senses this November with a hands-on candle making workshop that blends creativity, culture, and storytelling. This unique experience invites you to craft your own custom candle while exploring the history and tradition of scent as a form of personal and cultural expression.
McClellanville carries the same quiet strength found throughout Gullah Geechee communities- a rhythm of fishing, weaving, preserving, and creating with your hands. When we make candles here, we're tapping into that shared lineage of craftsmanship.
This workshop becomes a bridge between Gullah Geechee tradition and McClellanville's coastal artistry, honoring the way both communities create beauty from the land around them.
Fall in the Lowcountry has its own scent language- pine, sweet woods, marsh breezes, warm spices from the kitchen, citrus from porches and gardens. When participants blend their fall fragrances, they are building candles that create a personal sensory experience that reminds them of home.
Our workshops are designed for people coming together and connecting as we share stories, while working with our hands and creating.
Discover the art and technique of candle making, from wick setting to wax pouring-
Learn about essential oils, fragrance blending, and the roots of scent storytelling, including botanicals inspired by the Gullah Geechee culture.
Begin crafting your candle base with guided instruction and a demonstration.
Infuse your candle with custom scents, dried herbs, and embellishments that reflect
your story
By the end of the workshop, you'll leave with more than just a handmade candle, you'll take home a meaningful memento infused with memory, culture, and intention.

Pottery Workshop w/Katharine Purcell
Join us to make your very own ceramic olive-oil cruet (or vinegar or soy-sauce cruet—we don’t judge). We will practice hand-building and surface-decoration techniques, experimenting with form and function. Clay, tools, and texture rollers will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own favorite stamps. Participants will be able to collect their creations once they have been fired.
Bio: Katharine Purcell creates wheel-thrown and altered mugs, bowls, platters, and other tableware that pay homage to her native Lowcountry surroundings. Fish and shrimp dart across her plates while trumpet vine and palmetto gather along the sides of her bowls. Her fascination with nature, form, and utility was first nurtured in grade school when she began shaping clay that she dug from neighboring creek banks and road cuts. And while she pursued a career in liberal-arts education, she continued to work with clay, eventually organizing Waveware Studio where she now works full time.
Seats are very limited for this workshop so be sure to register soon.

Chamber Music Charleston at the MAC
McClellanville Arts Council and Chamber Music Charleston present
“Echoes of the Saint Cecilia Society: Celebrating the Nation’s Artistic Heritage With Music for String Quartet”
Chamber Music Charleston will present a special concert at the gallery of the McClellanville Arts Council (733 Pinckney Street, McClellanville, SC) on Monday, May 4, 2026, at 7:00 PM. This free performance commemorates America’s 250th anniversary through masterworks for string quartet, illuminating the Lowcountry’s pivotal role in the nation’s early musical life while reflecting Europe’s enduring influence on the development of chamber music.
Funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, this concert is part of a broader initiative by Chamber Music Charleston connecting America’s early musical foundations to the profound legacy of European composers. Central to this history is the Saint Cecilia Society, founded in Charleston in 1766 and among the earliest musical organizations in the United States. Through its concerts until 1820, the Society helped cultivate a vibrant cultural life in a young nation. By revisiting repertoire connected to this era in historically resonant settings, Chamber Music Charleston honors the Society’s lasting contributions to America’s musical identity and celebrates a defining chapter in the country’s cultural heritage.
The program features Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s String Quartet in F Major, K. 590—one of his final and most refined quartet works—and Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 2, a pivotal piece written by the Hungarian composer who emigrated to the United States in the 1940s
Founded in 2006, Chamber Music Charleston is recognized for its engaging and diverse classical programming, from Ovation Concerts at the Dock Street Theatre and St. Matthew's Lutheran Church to intimate House Concerts in historic downtown residences and the grand living spaces of Kiawah Island and Bishop Gadsden. Each season, CMC presents more than 50 performances, bringing internationally acclaimed guest artists together with Charleston’s outstanding professional musicians.
